Artist Profile : Born in 1942 in Baroda, Altaf studied in Gwalior and then Fine Arts in England. He has several solo exhibitions to his credit. He exhibited regularly from 1970 onwards. His belief in Marxism ensured that his painting developed an edge that he used to further social causes. In 1985 he exhibited outside Union Carbide on the first anniversary of the Bhopal tragedy. In 1988 his retrospective was held at the Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai and then again in 2002 at Sakshi gallery, Mumbai. He exhibited regularly with Navjot and took part in important group shows like "50 years of Mumbai Artists" at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Mumbai, the Glenbarra Art Museum Collection at the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi and the Exhibition in aid of Latur Earthquake victims in Baroda and Delhi in 1993. His activities included workshops and educational projects at schools and colleges, pavements and slums of Mumbai where he worked till he passed away in 2005.
