Artist Profile :

Born in Junagadh, Gujarat in 1947. He completed his Diploma in Painting and his Post-Diploma in Graphics in 1992 at the M. S. University at Baroda and was a visiting faculty at NID Ahmedabad between 1982 and 1987. He has held more than 35 solo exhibitions and has won awards at the Gujarat State Lalit Kala Exhibitions in 1966, 1967 and 1987, the 1st Prize at Kalidas Art Exhibition at Ujjain in 1967 and 1989, and a Gold Medal at the Art Society of India Exhibition in 1970 in Mumbai. His paintings are to be found in most major collections in India and abroad. Solanki paints his trademark black and white faceless portraits of the pure and honest Rabari rustic folk with their ornately embroidered clothes. They invoke his romance with the place and its people. His hatching strokes and contrasting tonalities in black and white reveal a subtleness rarely seen. He says, 'I want to continue making statements through visual language, while keeping my roots. My works must appeal and be understood by the common man.'201D Solanki lives and works in Ahmedabad.
